Mindless Monday

PaperorPlastic_teaandhotchocolate.JPG

It's HOT out, I want it to be truly Fall. I want to drink HOT tea, HOT Chocolate and HOT coffee.  But no, the indian summer is here in L.A., it was a summer beach weekend. Although we were out in the high desert for a historical event this weekend, it was windy and HOT there too. What a crazy Fall. Next week I'll be in NM taking care of some family business, but hope to keep up my posts with maybe a small NM adventure here or there. At least with my family it will always be an adventure for sure. One day I may live somewhere different, at least I hope. But in the meantime I've been trying to take advantage of where I live. Doing local things, like I did a few weekends ago here.

When I'm in a new area I always try and find a cool coffee or tea place. I found this one above on Pico Blvd., called Paper or Plastik. I loved this place, great vibe, good food and flavorful tea and coffee. I had tea the first time and loved how they served it in this cute little pot and great cups.

Ballet Class.JPG

Also this place is attached to a dance studio, where we were able to peer into a ballet class, oh this looked like so much fun. It's always a treat to find a new place in any neighborhood in L.A., we're so far spread out you have to enjoy what's near you, while you can, otherwise the traffic will swallow you up.

Here's to hoping it turns colder in L.A., if not I'll let you know what it's like in New Mexico soon enough.  Enjoy the week!

Paper or Plastik

5772 W. Pico @ Ogden (just east of Fairfax Blvd.)

Open 7am - 10PM

On the weekends, no Laptops allowed (i kind of like that)

Umba

UmbaFallLine13.jpg

Are you passionate about homemade products, about supporting emerging artists, how about being socially responsible?  Do you want to be a part of supporting this entrepreneurial movement? So let me ask you, have you heard of Umba?

Earlier this year I was introduced to Umba Box, which use to be a subscription based service that provided handmade goods. I received this great handmade gift posted here on Instagram. After two years in business they are re-branding themselves as Umba.

Umba is a one-of-a-kind social selling platform that selects savvy entrepreneurs to be Umbassadors, empowering them to launch their own businesses as independent consultants. Umbassadors earn 20% of sales made from hosting online and in-home Trunk Shows, they receive direct mentorship from industry experts, and they join an active community of new friends, all the while helping to improve the lives of artists across the world. I think I want to be an Umbassador, just cause I like the way it sounds.

Part of their mission statement is that Umba is a two-sided equation of empowerment. They empower artists by connecting them with passionate consumers and Umba empowers entrepreneurs who recognize that they want more out of life than a 9-to-5 job. And who doesn't want that.

Some of my favorite products on the site are this DIY Tea Towel Kit , this Letterpress Banner Kit, oh and this amazing Flat Bracelet. For little ones, they can practice their photography skills with a Pixie Wooden Camera. I kind of want that Pixie camera for my own collection.

Umba's Fall Collection is inspired by relationships, and they’ve curated products that speak to that. Browse their entire Fall Lookbook here!

Italian Travel Adventures

PineConeRome.jpg

As mentioned a few Tech Tuesday's ago,  traveling to Italy in the days before we all had a camera and computer in our pockets was a welcomed adventure.

Here's the story I was referring to for our arrival to Rome, maybe you can relate and laugh and share your own fun travel stories. When your traveling on a budget, off-season and backpacking you have to be ready for any adventure. This includes sometimes taking night trains to cut hotel costs. To get to Rome we took the night train from Venice.

TanyaEating.jpg

We also had one baguette and one jar of Nutella for this overnight train ride. Miche and I called this concoction "chocolate bread."  We ate that on our train ride while trying to get a few snaps that ended up turning int double exposures and a hot mess of images, but they make me laugh every time I see them.

MicheTanyaTrainEating.jpg

Next up was getting to Rome and then calling, from a pay phone, our pre-planned meeting place (pre-planned as in "on the plane to Milan"). Why would this be easy, the Pensione, of course, was booked. In my broken Italian I proceed to call every hotel in our Let's Go Italy book and found one that had a room for three girls.

Then I ask directions, mind you I have no pen, pencil or any writing utensil. So I'm repeating everything this man says out loud and trying to map this in my brain, which has no reference to a city I've never visited, Rome. We could have taken a taxi, but remember we're on a budget, so we are determined to take the train. Oh youth.

I really only remember one thing from those directions, saying "Il Spagna," over and over.  That was the train stop that we needed to get off at to walk to our Pensione. So the three of us make it to the underground train station. Out of no where, hundreds of people come flooding to the platform, train comes, WOW, seriously everyone shoves their way in. I'm so intimidated by large crowds, I resist. Then the train doors close and I am standing on the platform with my friend Ronda. We look at each other and realize Miche has been shoved into the train. I go running, with backpack on down the length of the train to find Miche. She is shoved in the middle of a crowd, ON THE TRAIN, with her backpack literally being pulled down by the mash of people. I bang on the window and just scream Il Spagna, Il Spagna. The train departs. I tell Ronda, "okay, we have to shove our way in, if we get separated, get off at the Spagna stop." So next wave of ants come, we shove our way into the train and pray that Miche heard us.

The Spagna stop comes, we run out, Miche is patiently sitting on a bench hoping we get off this train. Thank God, she heard all my mumbling directions. We all hugged, laughed and practically cried, very thankful we didn't get separated.

Once we gather ourselves, we proceed to walk many, many blocks looking for the street of our hotel. We come around the corner and we see the gypsy kids and immediately we all decide to put our backs against the wall so they can't steal anything or distract us. They are pissed and spit in our direction. Then they proceed to try and steal a well-dressed Italian man's wallet from his pocket. He proceeds to smack their hands and walks away. They eventually lose interest in us and walk away. Now we're slightly lost. So I ask anyone I can, in my broken Italian, where this address is. Someone kindly gives us directions and we continue on our way.

RondaTanyaRome.jpg

When we finally arrive, we find this giant door to a Palazzo. We open the doors, which leads to a courtyard. A sign tells us the Pensione is on the top floor.

So what do we do? LOOK FOR AN ELEVATOR. We are so kidding ourselves and resign to walking up SEVERAL flights of marble stairs. We get to the very top and knocked on this little door, completely out of breath and SPENT. The owners of the hotel quickly help us in, take our backpacks off and check us into our room. What a day! Trains, trains, separation, gypsy's, and stairs. Oh the joys of traveling, are you tired yet? We were, but after settling in and securing a reservation for our friends, we went on our non-tech adventure mentioned earlier. After that debacle we finally begin our Roman Holiday.

Harpist.jpg

Mindless Monday

Harpist.jpg

Today my mind is jumbled AGAIN. I have so much going on I can't focus at all. So I'm moving from one thing to another. I gave myself a computer break this weekend and I probably should have just sat down and hammered out what needed to be done. Today I am finally making me a list of what I need to do. I have a few friends that love LISTS and love to cross off what they accomplish, I'm more of check the box kind of girl. I find that writing things down is super helpful. For one it organizes my mind.

Sunday was National Coffee day and well I barely had time for a cup of coffee. I did manage to have some over the weekend, visiting my usual places Groundwork in Santa Monica for a Mocha and a Machiatto and then Emilia's for a Cappucino and that was all on Friday and Saturday.

Over the weekend I really took advantage of living on the Westside of L.A. county.  Went to the local farmers market for some food inspiration, met the harpist above, who was such a happy soul. Produce right now is very transitional. I was on the hunt for figs, cause it sounded so good, but didn't find any.  Apples are in and although I didn't get to apple picking with my friend Deborah at my.life.at.playtime, I hope to reap the bounty of what she picked and make something fantastic.

Glow Santa Monica.JPG

This is the third year for Glow in Santa Monica that showcases few art installations on the pier and beach. Some things were pretty cool. Like the beautiful light filled nets above which came with it's own audio, and mounds of sand to climb around. NYT wrote an interesting review on it. Other things were plain out weird and cosmic, not my thing. Great time for walking and biking as most of the downtown streets were closed. We choose to walk and boy my feet felt it.

After that we tried a new place called Bar Pinto, felt like a trip to Spain, followed up by watching Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown episode on Spain , which really made me visit Granada, Spain. On my list of things to do in this lifetime.

Venice Tote.JPG

Last thing for the weekend was a quick jaunt to the Abbot Kinney festival. I went early, 10AM just to get myself a tote from Urbanic and buy a t-shirt for my friend in the UK. It was already hot and looked like it was going to be a fun day full of food, music and amazing locally created arts and crafts. I had, had enough of crowds so getting there early was key for me, get in and out and take a quick look. Plus all the road closures and parking were not ideal.

October starts tomorrow. I hope to have a few more Fall focused posts and can't wait for a busy fun month of activities. Enjoy your week!

Simple Still Life.JPG

Mindless Monday

Simple Still Life.JPG

This is truly a Mindless Monday since I can't get my head straight and mind working. I'm all over the place today as this post will indicate. House and mind are cluttered.  I think if I get the house uncluttered it will help my mind.

Did you know yesterday was the first day of FALL? That makes me so happy, I love this time of year and am anxious to put on a sweater and crunch thru some leaves. We may get that opportunity soon if we end up in New Mexico helping out with a few family responsibilities. I have an itch to travel, I so want to get out of town, maybe my NM trip will help that out. Sometimes we need a relief from our routine. Which ironically I haven't had a routine in about 2 months.

I continue to explore a few vegan and gluten-free recipe',s just because, we'll see what I come up with. Someone just suggested a chickpea based cookie recipe that she tried over the weekend, she said it was fabulous, so I'll give that a good ole try. It might just be vegan too. Have a Happy Monday and great week.

Chocolate Gluten-Free Almond Cake

Slice of almond choc gluten-free cake.jpg

As you may already know I've been experimenting with gluten-free baking and my one foray into a vegan recipe, not so good.  In my gluten-free adventures I wanted to make something chocolate, go figure. Since visiting a local health store I've been stocking up on a few different flours. I really like Red Mill's choices. I decided to choose a Oat flour to go along with my Almond meal flour. Coconut flour is on my list to purchase, but it was a bit more expensive. Also, if you haven't already noticed, I almost always use some sort of bittersweet chocolate. I like the richness of it and can control the sugar myself. I am not a milk or white chocolate fan. Occasionally I use semi-sweet. I stock up on this around holiday times, since everyone bakes and bittersweet chocolate chips go on sale, mostly use Ghiradelli, but Trader Joes has a BIG bittersweet chocolate bar option.

Here's a cautionary note of WHAT NOT TO DO if your using a double broiler method to melt the chocolate and butter: #1 chop up the chocolate before putting it in the glass bowl with the butter and #2 NEVER use a knife in the bowl, while it's over the simmering water, that = exploding glass bowl. Yes I did this, and am fortunate enough to be spared glass in my eyes, or on my face, or taking out my jugular. Just a few shards of glass on my arm and ankle, with minor bleeding. Great way to start the day. An hour later, after I cleaned up both me and the kitchen, I started the recipe all over again, since there were shards of glass in my mixtures and pans, etc...

Despite my miss-adventures this recipe was a hit, and as usual I experimented on my friends who loved it too.

Chocolate Gluten-free Almond Cake Recipe

6 ounces bittersweet chocolate CHOPPED

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed

4 large eggs, separate the yolks from the whites and keep both

1/2 cup granulated sugar (half the sugar will go with the egg yolks and the other half with the egg whites)

1/3 cup plain whole-milk yogurt (I used non-fat Australian vanilla bean yogurt, because that is what I had on hand)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup almond flour (you can use hazelnut flour as an alternative)

1/4 cup oat flour (you can use buckwheat flour as an alternative)

Almond Slivers

Preheat the oven to 350ºF.

Butter an 8-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.

In a large, heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, don't let the bowl touch the water (SEE MY NOTE ABOVE FOR WHAT NOT TO DO). Melt the chocolate and butter until smooth, then remove from the heat and let cool slightly. You can also quickly melt this in the microwave.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, half of the sugar, yogurt, vanilla, and salt, then whisk them into the melted chocolate. Stir in the almond flour, and the oat flour.

In another bowl of a stand mixer, or hand mixer, whip the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Gradually whip in the other half of the sugar until the whites form firm peaks. Fold 1/3 of the whipped egg whites into the chocolate mixture to lighten it, then fold in the remaining chocolate mixture just until it’s completely combined.

Pour the batter into the pan, level the top and then sprinkle a generous amount of Almond slices over the top, the more the merrier. This gives it a beautiful finished look and adds in extra crunch.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes; cake should be set and the center slightly soft.

Let it cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the cake pan and serve.

Enjoy!

Blueberry Pies.jpg

Mini Blueberry Pies

Blueberry Pies.jpg

I think I might be slightly obsessed with blueberries.  While I normally buy them fresh, especially when they are on sale, we also buy wild frozen blueberries from our favorite store, Trader Joes. We keep these in our freezer for making shakes or defrosting to put into yogurt and now for mini blueberry pies.  I got this recipe from a recent Bon Appetit , I keep challenging myself to make a least one of the recipe's in their magazine, sometimes more come out of it. I'm the dessert maker, SB finds all the savory ones to make. Here's the recipe I used and well the image above is inspired by Bon Appetit too.

Pastry Dough

1 1/2 cups of flour

1/2 tsp sugar

1/4 tsp kosher salt

1/2 cup chilled unsalted butter (i usually cut this into small cubes before I mix it in)

Use a food processor, if you don't have one use a pastry blender.  Pulse the flour, sugar and salt in the food process and in add in the butter. Pulse until the texture looks like coarse meal. Add 1/4 cup ice water, pulse. Add more water if it's till dry. Dough needs to come together in clumps.

Form into a square (this makes it easier to roll out the rectangle. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for about 2 hours till it gets firms.  Let it stand to room temperature for 15 minutes before rolling it out.

Preheat oven to 375°.

Blueberry Mixture

2 cups of blueberries (Either use fresh blueberries or defrost some frozen ones)

1 tsp of lemon zest (usually one lemon)

1 tbsp of fresh lemon juice (usually one lemon)

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 tsp kosher salt

1 egg large egged whisked with a tbsp of water

Raw sugar

Roll out dough on a floured surface into a large rectangle. Cut into 6 rectangles. If there not perfect, embrace it, these are handmade and should look like it.

Mix berries with lemon zest, lemon juice, sugar, and salt in a medium bowl. Brush edges of rectangles with water; (I used my fingers dipped in the water, it's faster for me).  Place about a tablespoon and half of blueberries in center of each rectangle (may use more or less, depending on how big the piece is.). Fold dough over, and press edges to seal. Place the six rectangles on a parchment-lined baking sheet, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with raw sugar. Cut slits in tops. You can see i should have cut more slits, but it still turned out yummy.

Bake mini pies for about 35-40 minutes, rotate sheet halfway through, until juices are bubbling and pastry is golden brown (be warned the juices will run onto parchment). Let cool slightly, these can be served warm or at room temperature.

Enjoy!

Vintage Car.JPG

Mindless Monday

Vintage Car.JPG

It's going to be a busy week, so posts will be few. We'll see how much I end up on instagram, it really depends. We have another local assignment, so we'll be juggling real-life work with volunteer work and well that means this place always suffers, but I'm OK with that. Seriously my priorities are as follows:

1. Volunteer Work - it's religiously based and MY LIFE.

2. Secular Work - cause we gots to pay the bills, I actually like what I do

3. Blog Work- i love this space, it's my lifeline to creativity, but it's #3 on the list till one day it can be #2 and help pay the bills.

Past weekend was filled with spending long days in volunteer work, making a chocolate gluten-free cake (blog post soon), visiting with friends and babies and a favorites party (see a sample of one here) and a going-away party. Oh party party party. Our social life has been full. We are ready for some down time. I might have forgotten what that is? We'll be carving out some space for that soon...I hope.

I foresee a road trip and what I wouldn't do to drive an old car like the above thru the desert, of course with a good radio and some air conditioning or heater, depending when we get on the road. But this just screams road trip to me. Until then enjoy your week, hope it's as fulfilling as mine.

Chocolate Creme Fraiche Tart.jpg

Chocolate Creme Fraiche Tart

Chocolate Creme Fraiche Tart.jpg

I know I teased you all this week on Instagram, but I wasn't really trying.  I just took all my pictures of the above Chocolate tart for the blog and promptly sat down and ate it when I was done. Then I looked over at my fabulous plate from England and saw I had practically licked it clean. So here today is my Chocolate Creme Fraiche Tart. I know rich right and yes RIGHT and so good.

I know you all go buy the Creme Fraiche at Trader Joes, I cannot be the only one. I use this stuff for everything. Mixed with Tapatio for quesadillas, or chicken taquitos. Mixed with sugar and lemon zest for french toast and whatever else I can come up with. This time when I took the package off I noticed there were recipes on the back. So I thought, I'm having dinner with my friend, she loves chocolate, I love Creme Fraiche. It's a match made in my kitchen.

Chocolate Creme Fraiche Tart

1/2 cup milk (I used whole milk, cause why not)

7 oz chopped bittersweet chocolate (I used Ghiradelli)

1 large egg yolk

7/12 ounces of Creme Fraiche

9 inch tart pastry (I made my own, recipe found below, but you can use a pre-baked pastry shell if that's easier for you)

Preheat the oven to 325.

Lightly whip egg yolk with the Creme Fraiche and set aside. Bring milk to a boil, stir continuously. Turn off heat and add chocolate to milk. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Slowly add egg and Creme Fraiche mixture to the chocolate mixture and stir thoroughly.

Place the pastry into a 9 inch tar pan and pour in the chocolate Creme Fraiche mixture. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove tart from oven and cool to room temperature. Chill in refrigerator for at last one hour before serving. Serves 8.

Tart Pastry

1 1/4 cups (6 1/2 oz/ 200g) cups all purpose flour

1 tbsp sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup (4 oz/125 g)  unsalted butter, chilled

2 tbsp, or more, cold water

I used a food processor, but you can do this by hand using a pastry blender.

Place the flour, sugar and salt in the processor. Cut the butter into small pices and add them. Process using rapid pulses until mixture resembles small crumbs or flakes. Add 1 tbsp of water and process a couple of seconds. Add additional tbsps of water untill it is damp enough to form a rough mass.

Dump the dough onto a piece of clear plastic wrap and form into a cake. I wrapped mine up and let it sit in the refrigerator to cool for 30 minutes. After that pull it out, roll it to a nice round circle and form it into your tart pan. I like to use removable bottom steel tart pans, but use what your used to.

Chocolate Creme Fraiche Tart.jpg

I enjoyed this tart with a cup of coffee in the morning and well a cup of tea in the afternoon. Whatever works for you it was delicious the next day.

Back of the Napkin.jpg

Back of the Napkin

Back of the Napkin.jpg

On a day when you are probably thinking about World issues, you may think this is a little trivial. At least here in the U.S. there is always self reflection on this day, remember what we did before Sept. 11th. I think this is the first thing in history that I was fully aware of and lived thru watching it live on TV.  I try not to rehash that day, but always try to remember live each day like it really matters what you do and what you want to be remember for.

This brings me to some of the little things I enjoy. Each month I get a few magazines subscriptions, you can see them here.  One of my favorite columns is the back page of Bon Appetit. I love this "back of the napkin" series. In the August issue Sofia Coppola was featured. I love this one, I really like her, never met her, but I like her movies, photography and musical taste. She's got a unique style. In this issue she named a few LA favorite places to eat.

Giorgio di Baldi in the Santa Monica Canyon made the list. They have great Italian food, small intimate place. It's been ages since I've eaten there, was with a Foodie client way back in the 90's, and well SB has never been, so this is a must visit place. One of the other places she mentioned is Proof Bakery in Atwater Village. I made a special field trip just to go check this place out. You'll love the low-key vibe and great pastries and coffee.

I think a Napkin series on your favorite places would be fun, don't you. Let me know what you think? I'd love to hear from you all on what your favorite places are in  your city. Leave a comment below and let me know if you'd be willing to submit a Napkin with your list of places to visit, even if it's from your Smart Phone and even if your on vacation.  All the better I say.

Stumptown Beans.jpg

Stumptown Open in Los Angeles

Stumptown Beans.jpg

I am outside my one post per day. But I found out Stumptown Coffee Roasters opened up in Los Angeles yesterday.  Location is 806 S. Sante Fe, in Downtown LA.  I love this new space, can't say I am super glad it's in DTLA. Would love something closer to the Westside, cause as you all know it takes hours sometimes to go 10 miles here.

Stumptown.jpg

LA Times photographer was there today and there should be something online at LATIMES.com this afternoon about the opening. Great space, tall ceilings, amazing roasting machines.  It's all industrial with warm wood tones and that's just the decor.

Stumptown Lights.jpg

I need a these lamps AND I need a space where I could hang these too.

Stumptown Menu.jpg

On to the coffee. There are nice choices, I've already done a mini tasting of the coffee during my camping trip here. So I'm familiar with a few of the blends. I ordered a Latte, it was milky smooth, but I think I'll be moving back to Macchiato's, I'm not such a milk person these days, I just enjoy the jolt of the beans by themselves.

Maple Bacon Scone.jpg

Oh and treats a Maple BACON scone. And yes there was a piece of bacon on top. I couldn't order it, GUILT, but I will when I go back when I feel less guilty.

Stumptown RR.jpg

I am going to call this image above the Stumptown Coffee Roasters Rolls Royce. It is a beautiful machine for brewing the espresso.

Stumptown Coffee copy.jpg

Digging there logo and well I got so excited about drinking this I mixed the latte art with my raw sugar. Oh well.

Stumptown Coffee Mug.jpg
Stumptown Mugs.jpg

Products peeps, I love mugs, and tin camping mugs even more.

stumptown postcard.jpg

Wish you were here enjoying a great

cup of coffee with me in this new #DTLA

Stumptown Coffee location.

Tech Tuesday

For me, Vine did it first with 6 second videos and then Instagram introduced videos.  Which do you prefer for making your videos on social media? I haven't decided yet. I liked Vine when it was first introduced, it challenged me to come up with something engaging that only took 6 seconds. What I found hard was getting the videos uploaded and I didn't like that I had to create it in the Vine application. Same issues with Instagram. However, on one of Instagram's latest updates I see you can make your video elsewhere and upload it.

Today I opened a Vimeo account and uploaded my Instagram video above. Song courtesy of my car radio playing Imagine Dragons "Radioactive." Quite a few of you like that song and well you'll really dig the acapella group Pentatonix version, shot on location in the Salton Sea featuring violinist Lindsey Stirling. It's on YouTube, do you use You Tube for your video social channel or prefer another one?

In all my classes I've taken on social media, blogging, web development, everyone says the same thing, "content is king" but I say "video content is king." I've seen lots of different types of content on sites and video get's the best results. My only issues is when to watch them. Sometimes I prefer the silent videos with full messages that I can watch at anytime without disturbing people. I do seriously forget that there is audio when I've attempted to make my own videos, so this is a good alternative for me, otherwise you have me or SB talking in the back about some nonsense or singing some dumb song while we work.

The stop motion videos I've seen on Instagram blow my mind on what is possible. You should check out this one: @rachleryle she is awesome.

There are also a few video series I love made by some great bloggers out there. Mostly they are for parents and kids, but well I'm a kid at heart so I qualify.

Olive Us is fantastic way to show positive aspects of your family and is so creative. This series just got picked up on uLive.com, you can watch here.

The other is a new PBS Parents series called Adventures in Learning, here's the one on Stargazing, love this and can't wait to do this myself.

So what do you use for making and sharing videos? Have you gone big and hired production companies. Two I'd like to work with are Tiger in a Jar and Dark Rye which is producing content for Whole Foods magazine. A few weeks ago I posted this video, from Dark Rye and I still love it:

Mindless Monday

Groundworks.JPG

Remember the saying "Weekends were made for Michelob," well not so much. I actually don't like Michelob, and really not sure if they still make beer. I'll have to ask the beer snob in my house. And I just asked, he's sitting right next to me. and he said yes they still make it and he cringed,  He thought he was "high class" back in the day when he drank that Michelob Dry. Times have changed.

My weekends are marathon runs. Trying to be outside as much as possible, especially as I work from home, we all need to get outside of our daily environments.  This past weekend, and mine starts on Friday, was full of trying to get back into my regular routine. Well, it didn't really even start, I had one day of a sort of regular routine. In a few weeks I'll try again, cause it ain't going to happen in the next two weeks.

Groundworks1.jpg

I did get to stop at my current favorite coffee place, Groundwork. Are you starting to see a coffee theme to this blog, I am. I love Groundwork and this sliver of a location is my favorite, the other one on Rose is much bigger, but I like the "one person" wide space on Main Street in Santa Monica. I usually get a Mocha, and that's unusual for me. But they make it so well, not to sweet and not to milky, just the right combo. This week I choose a Machiatto...i needed the jolt of espresso with just a dollop of milk. It was perfect start to the weekend. Hope your week is off to a great start. It's definitely cooler in LA today so that's a good thing. Enjoy this September day.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Hollar Mountain.jpg

In a few months my fellow bloggers and I are doing an event that will include a coffee tasting.  The good folks at Stumptown Coffee Roasters have already agreed to submit there coffee for this tasting. This past Labor Day weekend we went camping a perfect place to try some new coffee. Thanks to Stumptown we had the opportunity to try some amazing coffees. I'm kicking myself for not purchasing the camping coffee mugs, they are perfect. They will be going in my camping kit for the next time.

The two we tried were Ethiopia Mordecofe (I kept calling this one Mordecai, as in the bible character) and Holler Mountain.

Stumptown Ethopian.jpg

Incidentally my fellow coffee aficionado, Gita, also gifted Ethiopia Mordecofe to me on our last visit to San Jose. She's up in Seattle and has been bragging about Stumptown for a few months. We have our own little coffee exchange, I sent her a bag of Handsome Coffee Roaster beans she brought me Stumptown.

Ethiopia Mordecofe definitely has a fruity taste. Can I say, seriously, tasting coffee out in the woods, before everyone is awake, just opens all the senses. Aaron, as in the other half of Deborah at my.life.at.playtime loved this one. He's a tea snob and after I read the flavor notes, which include black tea, orange blossom and bergamot which converge (their word) with flavors of lime, peach and hops. I told him you like it cause it has flavors of black tea. This is a good cup of coffee that everyone enjoyed. I think Gita mixed it with some Handsome Coffee and said it was mind blowingly good.

The second bag we tried was Holler Mountain, I really liked this blend. It went perfect with french toast and bacon. The flavor notes are syrupy, with notes of blackberry, hazelnut and toffee. We brewed these coffees two different ways. We used a French Press above from Target (only $12) and brewed the other in old fashion percolator.

I can't wait till the official coffee tasting where we all can take notes on each coffee and pick our favorites. I figure it's like wine or art, it's subjective and really your taste.  Thanks to Stumptown for letting me try these coffee's before the big event. I might be slightly biased now to Stumptown, which isn't a bad thing, since they'll be opening in LA very soon.

Curves in the Road.jpg

Mindless Monday

Curves in the Road.jpg

As much work it is to prepare for a camping trip, I still love getting on the road and out of the city. Once you set up "home", your tent, it's just about living. Not much else to do, but enjoy the outdoors. Chop some wood for fire, boil some water for coffee, put on your shoes for hiking and exploring. Life is simple, we don't need much, well a hot clean shower is always nice. I think that is one of the life lessons I always learn when I go camping. Life doesn't need to be complicated, we don't necessarily need a lot of "stuff." We really can get by with the minimal supplies, just the basics.  As we're back to "civilization" and fully dialed in technically, I find it peaceful to just not do much today. Another busy week will present itself and we'll be back to next Monday. So I'm being fully present today, recharging and just happy reading and lazing about in my pj's.

Failure Schmailure

IMG_3454.JPG

In the essence of true transparency, I decided to try making a vegan, gluten free dessert. Why you ask? Because quite a few of my friends are vegan or gluten-free and whatever else you can think of, oh raw food eaters (not going to touch that one yet). This is the first time I've tried to make a recipe fully from scratch, I mean developing the ingredients and measurements with no guide. I probably should have started with something simpler, like with BUTTER, and real sugar.

So as beautiful as the batter and the pluots look, this cake didn't exactly turn out right. First off I could taste the earth balance butter and secondly it wasn't sweet enough and one more thing, I think I should have put the pluots in halfway thru the process. They were so juicy the cake really never fully baked. So what I got was a pudding cake. I do have to say the pluots helped the sweetness. However, I think I'll stick to tarts for pluots and stone fruits. Next try will involve canola oil, instead of earth balance butter, and a little more sweetener and probably some almonds on top for crunch and prettiness.

So I call this Failure Schmailure....yes I'm still trying to eat it, and yes I'll try this again.

Muji Products.jpg

Muji

Muji Products.jpg

About 3 years ago, while in NYC working, I was introduced to Muji. I'd never seen this store, they didn't have one in LA. I love Muji's philosophy:

"In its deliberate pursuit of the pure and the ordinary – achieves the extraordinary."

All their products live by that philosophy. I was immediately drawn to the stationary, I love notebooks and use them all the time. Since then I've been a fan, mostly ordering online.  Earlier this year on a trip to San Jose, right outside my hotel was a Muji store. I nearly squealed, actually I did squeal, and on my night off immediately went to shopping. I told my two co-workers (one based in Denver, the other in Seattle) about my purchases, they'd never heard of the store either.

So a few weeks ago on our last visit to San Jose, wearing my Muji scarf, I made converts out of these two ladies. I think I went back to Muji three days in a row. We all bought scarfs, pens, notepads, socks, I think someone even bought a linen blazer. Oh and I said I'd bought that story board book above and colored pencils for one my friends kids...yeah I am SO keeping that. I love it.

Best thing I found out while there, they are opening a store in Hollywood, I'd prefer if it was closer to the Westside, because it will probably be quicker to fly to San Jose then to drive to Hollywood.  But I guarantee I'll be there when it opens.  Check out their online store, you'll love the simplicity of their products, and if you travel a lot, they have small items perfect for carry-on luggage.

Tech Tuesday Italy.jpg

Tech Tuesday

Tech Tuesday Italy.jpg

For this months Tech Tuesday, or maybe you'll call it a non-tech Tuesday, I want to highlight what we did before we all had a computer in our hands when we travel.

About 20 years ago I went to Italy with 4 friends.  I traveled with two girlfriends and we made plans to meet up with our guy friends in Rome. Back then, maybe people had pagers, certainly cell phones were not prevalent in the US. I do remember seeing a few very Chic Italians with cell phones, but only a few.

We were young, traveling off-season (March) and flying by the seat of our pants so we made NO hotel reservations anywhere. Instead we decided to look thru our Let's Go Italy book and decide what hotel we'd meet at when we arrived in Rome. You see we flew into Milan, went our separate ways and agreed that mid-way thru our trip, we'd meet in Rome at "such and such" hotel, with NO reservation.

Of course when we got to Rome and called the hotel there were NO rooms left. Are you getting the idea, with all the NO's. So I went down the list of hotels in our travel guide, and in my broken Italian found one that had a room for us three girls. I'll tell you about the adventure getting there in another post. When we arrived we asked if there was a room for our friends, and yes there was, so we asked them to hold it for them.

Now, how to tell our friends that we changed hotels and have a room for them.  What would you have done? No cell phone, no contact number for where they were staying, no idea when they were arriving, we only agreed on the day and place, not the time.

We decided to go to the hotel where we said we'd meet and try to speak to the owner and let them know to tell our friends where we are. Once we got to the hotel, we couldn't find a door or entrance, we saw a buzzer and buzzed several times. No one answered.  Across the street was a cafe, we ate, drank cappuccino and waited and waited. After being fully caffeinated, we devised a new plan.

Remember no cell phones. "Let's write a note." We laughed at ourselves, because there was no alternative and we thought this was really silly and probably wouldn't work. However, we found a place on the building near the buzzer and left it. This was a busy street, mopeds zooming by, people walking up and down, cafes, tourist, you name it. Our thought, "hope the note stays put." It looked something like this (original note is long gone):

Note.jpg

Then, well...we went on tour thru Rome. Walked to the Colosseum, that's me above, with my manual camera, some 20 years ago. I still have and love that camera.  We left the boys fate to the Note and had ourselves a grand time. Saw a Vogue fashion shoot, wandered around the Colosseum, dodged the crazy Italian drivers and enjoyed our first day in Rome.

Later that day, when we arrived back to the Hotel the owners were so excited, "the boys are here!" they yelled. We were really surprised, we went running to their room and had to know how they found us. "We saw the NOTE!" We shared our travel tales and rejoiced that all had worked out well. Without the technology we have today we still found a way to make sure we communicated, even if it was the old-fashioned way.

How did we ever get by without our phones? We rely on them so much, I call my husband when we get separated at Costco, "where are you"? Do you remember what you use to do? I have to say these adventures make me smile as we didn't have any alternatives back then. Not every outcome turns out well, but you can always chalk it up to a tale you will have to tell.

Today when I travel in-country it's easy with my phone service in most areas. But only 3 years ago when I went to the UK and France, I didn't have an iPhone, only a Blackberry and my texting was non-existent, email and phone calls were limited, it was only for work. Today it's so expensive to get your phone to work internationally I'm not sure I'd even try. I really like to be disconnected from it all. Though I know I'd be all over Instagram, so I'd probably have to work something out or go into serious withdrawals.

This weekend we'll be camping and I already know we'll have no phone service and I'm kind of looking forward to that.  What do you do during travel, especially internationally, do you take your phones or unplug? Would love to hear.

Mindless Monday

IMG_3336.JPG

This past week SB and I volunteered nearby, Beverly Hills. Renewed friendships, dug deeper into just a passing hello or how you doing from acquaintance's. Made new friends, found a kindred spirit that is 20+ years older, walked up and down Rodeo drive, knocked at door where Gene Kelly use to live, shopped an estate sale, had my picture taken by tourist's on a star tour, apparently I was standing in front of a celebrities house. What I learned, no matter where you live or work or volunteer, we all have the same problems, rich or poor, we all have aches and pains of aging, of the economy, of family issues, well at least at the moment. When you think of Beverly Hills you think of celebrity and fame which are fleeting, what matters are who we are inside and our relationship with our creator. It's so nice to be with people who have endured all kinds of things in life yet we all have a common belief that gives us hope of a better life that isn't so superficial. Getting off my soapbox now....it's my Mindless Monday, so that's part of what is in my jumbled brain.

Almond Lemon Slice of Cake.jpg

Almond Lemon Gluten Free Cake

Almond Lemon Slice of Cake.jpg

I get so inspired by all the great photo's and blog post and especially about making things gluten-free. I tolerate gluten, but feel better when I don't partake of it. I saw this recipe and knew I had to give it a try. I still haven't been brave enough to try the vegan route...i just can't give up butter. This cake is really moist and very yummy. Give it a try.

Almond Lemon Gluten Free Cake
(Adapted from Cakelets and Dollies Recipe which was adapted from Donna Hay's Recipe)

Almond Lemon Cake Overview.jpg

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
1 tsp of vanilla extract

(NOTE: if you have a vanilla bean, use that, split and scrap out the seeds to put in the mix For my recipe I didn't have a vanilla bean on hand, so vanilla extract worked great.) 1/4 tsp almond extract (because why wouldn't you want more almonds)
Zest of 4 lemons, if you want in more lemony taste you can squeeze a little lemon juice, but this is already a very moist cake so be warned.  Original recipe called for 1/4 cup lemon zest which can be about 6 lemons.
4 eggs, separated, make sure you let them get to room temperature
2 1/2 cups almond meal (Surprisingly I found this at Trader Joes, but you should be able to find in a local health food store or Whole Foods)
10 1/2 oz ricotta
Flaked almonds, to decorated and add more crunchiness
Powdered sugar, for dusting

Preheat oven to 325. Butter 8-9 inch cake round, I use parchment paper on the bottom and also butter that, it makes it easier to get the cake out of the pan.

I used my KitchenAid stand mixer, but you can also use a regular beater. Mix softened butter, 1 cup of sugar, lemon zest, vanilla (either extract or vanilla seeds from the bean), until its pale yellow and creamy. I did this for about 6 minutes (thus why i like to use my KitchenAid stand mixer). Add in the separated egg yolks one at a time, that is if you didn't already blend them all together, in that case just drizzle egg yolks in a little bit at a time.  You'll need to scrape down the sides of the bowl through out the process.

Mix in the Almond Meal. Scrape down sides and take bowl from under mixer and fold in the Ricotta.

In a separate bowl mix the egg whites until white and fluffy, slowly pour in the 1/3 cup of remaining sugar until it makes glossy soft white peaks. Gently fold in 1/2 the egg whites, you want to make this a lite and airy cake, finally fold in the rest of the egg whites.

Pour mixture into cake pan. Sprinkle almond slices over the top, I covered mine as much as possible.  Put in the oven and bake for about 45 minutes. May need more time, I think I added about 8-10 more minutes to this, but test center with toothpick to make sure it comes out clean and the cake is fully baked.

Almond Lemon Gluten Free Cake.jpg

When you pull it out it look like a fluffy cake, once it cools down it deflates a bit. After it cools down dust with powdered sugar and serve. With coffee is great.
